ホテルの部屋からアムステル川越しに
運河を自転車で駆けている少女を眺める
少女は片手を上げて振る
少女がほほ笑んだとき、彼は昔に戻る
ハリウッドのプロデューサーたちがこぞって
彼の人生をほろ苦い物語に変えてしまいたがったあのころに。
ひどい失敗を繰り返し、ただピア・アンジェリと
キャロル・リンレイとナタリー・ウッドとの恋だけがあった。
五二年の秋のあの日、彼はスタジオにふらっと入ってきて
「マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン」の曲のなかで、
あの完壁な旋律を演奏した ――
そしていま、窓と過ぎ去っていく少女のほほ笑みから
顔を起こし、完壁な空の青を見上げたとき
彼は知る。いまこそ、ほんとうに空を飛べる
めったにない日であることを。
